BAP119 Digitization and Presentation of Audiovisual Heritage
Funding Institution: Yaşar University
Many of the video and audio recordings of the events and facts of our recent past carry content of historical, social and cultural importance that cannot be replaced when lost. These records are also important resources for research and education. Today, these data are under the threat of irreversible mass destruction due to the degradation of magnetic tapes and film materials or technological change. These threats can be listed as mechanical (e.g. deformation), chemical (e.g. vinegar syndrome) and technological obsolescence (discontinuity on production and use of recorders/players and carrier materials). Research shows that the time remaining to preserve existing records is extremely limited.
Digitization and Presentation of Audiovisual Heritage Project aims to digitize audiovisual material recorded on magnetic tapes and film strips in various formats, enabling long-term preservation and processing. It provides a low-cost, sustainable, suitable solutions for small or medium-sized digitization projects, basic video /audio correction, and education/training. It has been designed as a laboratory that can provide preservation solutions, training, and education. It aims to preserve disappearing analog media content and make it accessible today and in the future.
